In a beautiful and moving ceremony on May 18th at Sinai Temple in Los Angeles, the Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies held their ordination services. These twelve ordinands each begin a new and exciting journey: Aviva Berg, David Caplan Bluman, Shai Cherry, Steven Edelman-Blank, Benjamin Katz, Rachel Mara Kobrin, Laurie Matzkin, Chaya Elizabeth Oliver, Penina Zahava Podwol, Moshe Smolkin, Adam Frank Stein and Elana Ann Zelony. Benjamin Katz was selected by his fellow ordinands to teach a Torah portion. He selected Sefat Emet on Par’shat Ekev (1896).
The program also featured the presentation of the Simon Greenberg Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Rabbinate. It was given posthumously to Rabbi Gerald Wolpe for his illustrious career as Rabbi of Har Zion Temple in Philadelphia, and his noted contributions to the religious and academic world especially in the areas of bioethics, medical education and the ethics of caregiving. Virginia Maas, Chairman of the Board of the Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies, presented the award on behalf of the family.
